Ceiling Fan Blades
Consider the Size, Length and Angle

Choosing the right ceiling fan blades is important in maximizing the comfort you get from your fan.

You probably regard the way that they appear in relation to your home’s décor for one. You may also think about the speed at which they rotate and cool your home.

The right size in the right room and in the right position will provide you excellent cooling in the summer and heating in the winter.

But the wrong fan in the wrong room will not provide optimum comfort and may just make you disappointed with your fan. Imagine having a small fan in a large room, or an excessively large fan in a small room.

To help you enjoy your fan perfectly, here are some guidelines in choosing blades for your ceiling fan.

Choosing Your Blade Size

The most important thing about fan blades is the size. The right size is key to the comfort and satisfaction you will get out of your fan. There are some guidelines to be followed when it comes to choosing the correct blade size for your room.

If the room is below 100 square feet or 9.3 square meters, a fan with 36 inch blades will do just fine. If the room is between 100 and 150 square feet, the ideal ceiling fan blades size is 42 inches in length. If the room is between 150 and 225 square feet, use a fan with 48-inch blades. If the room is large, with a size of between 225 and 375 square feet, use a fan with 52-inch blades.

For extra large rooms, you can choose from the extra large fans, which usually have 54-inch, 56-inch, 60-inch, and 70-inch blades.

Choosing the Right Blade Pitch

The blade pitch refers to the angle of the ceiling fan’s blades relative to a horizontal line. The higher the blade pitch, the greater the pressure the blade applies to the air around it, so the more powerful the air movement is. Ideally, the blade pitch should be between 12 and 14. Stay away from fans with blade pitch of between 8 and 10 degrees as they don’t offer sufficient air movement.

Choosing the Perfect Blade Style and Material

The style of your ceiling fan blades matter a lot because it affects the overall look of the fan, and thus, the look of your room too. Many people like to use fans because they also serve as decorative fixtures in a room. And the style of the blades matter a lot. Surely you’ve seen some fans with leaf-shaped blades, cloth blades, and so on. If you want a fan that stands out, these unique offers will surely do the trick. But if you want a more conventional look, just choose the blade finish that you prefer.

But if you’re looking for an outdoor fan, pay attention to the blade material as well. Make sure the blades are made of durable, rust-resistant, weatherproof blades, especially if the fan is to be used in open areas. If your fan is rated only for indoor use, do not use it outdoors as the blades will be vulnerable to warping.

If you’re wondering about the number of blades, this is not a major matter. The number of blades has little effect on the circulation of air, as long as the blade pitch and blade size are correctly chosen.

Accessories for Ceiling Fan Blades

  • Replacement fan blades
  • Manufacturers also usually offer replacement fan blades. Buying fan blades require you to buy only from the manufacturer of your fan, and to find the right blade for the specific model you have. You can, however, choose from various finish options.

  • Fan blade covers

Cleaning the blades of your fan can be an arduous task. Imagine all the mess your blades gather up. Surely the work will take a long time. Your best option is to use blade covers. These are like sleeves that you slip over the blades to prevent dust and other dirt from settling on the blade surface. Using blade covers for your ceiling fan means you don’t have to waste time cleaning your fan blades anymore. All you have to do is replace the blade cover.

Some of the blade covers available are disposable. These are usually made of nylon and are transparent so you can still show off the blade finish that you so carefully chose. Once installed, they are virtually invisible.

Some blade covers, on the other hand, are reusable and washable. Usually they also feature various designs, so they also have a decorative feature if you get tired of your plain old blade finish. This means you don’t have to clean your ceiling fan anymore. All you have to do is wash the blade covers like any other piece of laundry.

Your Guide to Choosing the Right Blades

The right choice of fan blades will depend on the room size and room type. A large indoor area will require a large fan, which usually come with wooden bladesand a variety of finishes. A large outdoor area will require a large fan with plastic or resin blades that are waterproof or damp-proof.

A hallway will require a small fan with short blades, while a laundry room or a comfort room will benefit from a small fan with damp-rated blades. So before you choose your ceiling fan blades, consider the room you’re shopping for.
