Ceiling Fan Blades
Consider the Size, Length and Angle

If you have a ceiling fan in your home you probably consider the ceiling fan blades quite a bit. You probably regard the way that they appear in relation to your home’s décor for one. You may also think about the speed at which they rotate and cool your home.

If you have a ceiling fan that works perfectly well but need a new set of blades (perhaps the style no longer matches your home or the blades themselves are damaged or warped), you will need to consider many different factors before purchasing a replacement set. It is not as simple as finding a set of blades that you like and just popping them onto the fan body.

Blade Size The size of the fan blades is crucial to the functionality and efficiency of any ceiling fan. Because the blade is what actually circulates the air throughout a room, it is important to consider how much surface area each blade possesses.

Blades that are too narrow or that are too short will not be able to sufficiently circulate the air throughout a room. Conversely, blades that are too wide or long may slow the motor down and reduce the air circulation as well. Always measure the size of the replacement blades before attaching them to the installed ceiling fan.

Powerful Motor Before attaching a set of replacement blades to your existing ceiling fan, you will want to consider whether the motor of the fan is powerful enough for the new blades. Remember, the motor is what exerts the force behind the blades as they circulate the air.

Take into consideration the weight of the blades and it might be too much for the existing motor. A ceiling fan must be able to spin the blades quickly and consistently in order to circulate a sufficient amount of air through any given area.

Length of the blade Once you have considered the size of the blades and the power of the motor, you should also consider the length of the fan blades.

The “sweep”, or length of the circumference of the circle the blades make as they spin, is an extremely important factor in the efficiency of any ceiling fan.

The longer the sweep, the more air can be circulated. But do remember that coupled with the width and motor speed, too long of a blade can cause more harm than good.

Angle or Pitch The angle, or pitch, of each ceiling fan blade is also a determining factor in how efficient a ceiling fan will be. The angle of the blade affects the amount of wind resistance and the fan’s ability to blow the circulated air downward.

Fan blades set flat will not circulate the air in a downward motion and will just waste energy. If you still have the original instructions from the fan, you may want to refer to those as you install your new replacement blades.

Style The style of the blade you choose for your ceiling fan is not quite as important as the size, pitch, and the power of the motor, but it is crucial to making your ceiling fan customized to your home décor and personal preferences.

There are many different types of fan blades including wood, palm leaf, bamboo, wicker, plastic, metal, and canvas. Additionally, across these different materials there are also different modifications made to fan blades including those that are raked or swept.

If you are thinking about replacing your existing ceiling fan blades with a new set, always bear in mind the size and shape of the new blades, their weight, and the power of the motor before you install them.

Once you have selected a set of blades and installed them, be sure to set the pitch correctly so that the fan is efficient as possible. If you are ever in doubt about replacing the fan blades, you should contact the fan manufacturer for suggestions.
