Ceiling Fan Comparison
What You Need To Know

Ceiling fan comparison help consumers decide what kind of fan is right for their needs.

Whether it is a commercial fan, or one for indoor home use, consumers need to have the best information available to make an informed decision.

The first thing a consumer needs to do before deciding on what kind of fan they want to purchase is consider where it will be used inside or outside of their home.

Outdoor Ceiling Fans

There are two types of outdoor ceiling fans that a consumer can choose from. One type is damp location rated, which can be used both inside and outside. These cannot come in direct contact with rain and are perfect beneath a covered porch, patio, or indoor swimming pool.

The other type is wet location fans which can be used be used in places where they are in direct contact with rain, such as gazebos and outdoor patios. These fans are made of non-rotting material, such as resin or plastic.

One downfall of outdoor ceiling fans is that some of the models available are not quite as customizable as a standard indoor fan. This includes being limited to fan blade style and colors, globes for lighting if it’s included, and whether or not the manufacturer offers a lifetime warranty or limited warranty.

Recommended outdoor ceiling fans include:

Low Profile/Hugger Ceiling Fans

Low profile ceiling fans – also known as hugger ceiling fans – are designed for indoor rooms with a ceiling clearance of eight feet or less. The fans are mounted flush to the ceiling with a clearance of five to seven inches between the ceiling and the blades. These fans are great for bedrooms or over kitchen tables.

The biggest downfall of these types of fans is that the air movement produced by them is very little.

They are less effective in cooling down a room due to the close proximity of the blades and the ceiling.

Also, the fan blades tend to reverberate and vibrate due to the air hitting the ceiling. To stop that, most low profile fans have smaller motors.

Recommended low profile/hugger ceiling fans include:

Industrial Ceiling Fans

Industrial ceiling fans are used to cool down and circulate air in large buildings and open areas, such as warehouse or facilities where the ceilings are very high.

Installed at least ten feet from the floor, they spin at higher velocities than most indoor residential ceiling fans. The blades are made of metal or hard plastic.ceiling fan comparison

These fans are definitely not decorative and usually only come in white or black. They also produce ‘wind noise’ from the high speeds they spin at.

These types of fans are not recommended for residential use. If consumers are looking for a ceiling fan with an ‘industrial look’ to fit their décor, they can be found at their local ceiling fan supplier.

Recommended industrial ceiling fans include:

Whatever type of ceiling fan you are shopping for, make sure you do your homework. Know what you need and be aware of the many different styles.
