Ceiling Fan Finishes
Tropical, Antique, Brass, Copper, Chrome…

Ceiling fan finishes are hands down the most confusing things to consider when choosing a ceilin-mount fan. There are just too many of them, and they all create a different look and feel.

The look and feel of your fan is not only created by its design. It is more heavily dependent on your fan’s finish.

Thus, a single model in two different finishes will be as good as two entirely different fans. The finish completes the look and feel of the fan, giving it an identity.

As a result, the finish is one of the most important aesthetical features of a ceiling-mount fan.

Different Finishes for Your Ceiling Mount Fan

  • Brushed nickel and chrome – Nowadays, the most popular among the different fan finishes is the brushed nickel or chrome finish. This is the primary finish featured in most contemporary style fans that are in vogue these days. The advantage is that brushed nickel or chrome will not rust and is tarnish-resistant. Also, this type of finish will not easily attract dirt or show fingerprints.
  • Antique Ceiling Fans – Antique finishes, as implied, creates an antique feel to a brand new fan, giving it a unique old-world charm. Antique finishes are very common among traditional style ceiling fans. Among all available fan finishes, the antique look is great for fans that are to be placed in large, luxuriant vintage or Victorian themed rooms or homes.
  • Black or Grey – Black or gray fan finishes create a sleek, contemporary look, especially if they come polished. These darker finishes can come in different styles too; some are plain black, gloss black, textured black, charcoal black, and so on. Textured finishes, however, are more suitable for use in rustic homes than in contemporary homes.
  • Brass or Gold Fans - Brass or gold finishes are also very popular, especially among the traditional and vintage style ceiling fans. Look for polished brass so you don’t have to polish since this finish is already tarnish-resistant. But if you want a more antique look, go for antique gold or satin brass.
  • Bronze – Bronze finishes have just recently started a revolution; these are now one of the most popular finish type in the industry. Bronze finishes come in many styles, but the most common would be the oil rubbed bronze. This can complement both traditional and contemporary fans. The weathered and distressed bronze are also popular, but they tend to appear in transitional and rustic fans.
  • Copper Finish – Copper is one of the selected ceiling fan finishes that appear more and more prominently in a lot of modern home appliances. Copper has an alluring look that still maintains a natural feel. If you want a contemporary look and feel, look for polished copper. Antique copper, on the other hand, is more suitable for traditional style fans.
  • Chrome – Chrome or polished chrome finish is very popular in the contemporary fan market. This is very similar to brushed nickel; in fact, it can be considered as the darker version of the latter. This is a very common fan finish so you won’t have difficulty finding a ceiling fan in this finish.
  • Gold Ceiling Fans – Gold finishes create a more classic, Victorian feel to a fan. This appears more in traditional fans than in any other style.
  • Nickel – Nickel is a popular fan finish, but it often appears in brushed style. However, there are other types of nickel fans, such as satin nickel. Popular brands Hunter and Savoy House have some beautiful satin nickel fans.
  • Off White Ceiling Fans – Off white or antique white ceiling fan finishes are also very common. They belong to the same class as almond, tan, and cream colored fans. These have a very light and earthy feel. The advantage of an off white finish is that it is not as plain as a simple white finish as it has more character, but it maintains the cleanliness and versatility of white. As a result, it can often be used in more rooms than any other type of finish.
  • Oil-Rubbed Bronze Fans – Oil rubbed bronze is the most popular style of bronze finish. Oil rubbed bronze is still bronze, but it is hand-rubbed with oil to give the fan a warmer, more welcoming feel. There are light and dark versions of oil rubbed bronze, but both versions retain the benefit of this finish – its resistance to fingerprints and other dirt and its durability despite exposure to weather elements.
  • Painted Colors – Fans with painted colors are those that come with distinct colors such as red, blue, green, yellow, orange, and so on, either in primary or pastel shades. Painted colors are more commonly found in kids’ fans, but they are also sometimes used in fans with bold, contemporary designs.
  • Pewter Ceiling Fans – Pewter is one of the most elegant ceiling fan finishes, and it also creates a distinct ancient look. Fans with a pewter finish tend to give off an authentic look.
  • However, while most pewter fans are classic or Victorian style, the finish is also sometimes used in contemporary style fans. The difference is that contemporary fans use plain pewter, while Victorian fans use antique pewter.

  • Rustic Ceiling Fans – The rustic finish gives off the illusion of age and antiquity. These are very popular among cabins, lodges, and Western-themed homes. The rustic finish is also often used to complement wrought iron furniture. You can find rustic finishes in both light and dark tones.
  • Satin – A satin finish is used with different types of metal. The effect it creates is a soft smooth sheen over the metal surface. It is glossy but not high-gloss; rather, it has a more velvety feel. This tends to be very elegant and is quite common in contemporary style fans.
  • Silver – Silver is another widely used fan finish when it comes to contemporary style fans. It is often used in outdoor ceiling fans too. Aside from that, silver is very versatile as it can match any type of color scheme, as long as the design of the room is contemporary.
  • Stainless-Steel Ceiling Fans – A stainless steel finish is the number one used in outdoor damp and wet rated fans. This is a weather-resistant, rust-resistant, and tarnish-resistant finish, making it extremely durable. The problem is that this can look dull sometimes so it requires a reasonable amount of care.
  • Venetian – The Venetian finish may be used with various types of metals. One popular combination is the Venetian bronze. This is highly recommended for indoor fans because it tends to romanticize the look and feel of a room.
  • White – White ceiling fan finishes are as simple, basic, and flexible as you can possibly get. White fans, despite the simplicity, are one of the most common and widely available fans around. This is an excellent choice if you value function over form. It is also often used as a contrast to darker themes. White fans are also widely used in smaller rooms.
  • Wood Fans – A wood finish creates a classic look for any ceiling-mount fan. It can tone down a contemporary fan and make it look homey. This finish is only appropriate for indoor ceiling fans. This is more common than stainless steel and silver finishes, especially for the blades. There are countless types of wood finishes for the blades, such as cherry, oak, walnut, mahogany, and so on.
  • Changing Your Fan Finish

Are you bored with your fan’s finish? There are plenty of ceiling fan finishes to choose from. Changing the finish of your fan won’t just change its look, but it will also change the look and feel of the entire room. Other than that, if you don’t have budget to buy a new fan, changing your fan finish will make your fan look good as new.
