Ceiling Fan Wiring It is Not Difficult to Wire a Ceiling Fan
Ceiling fan wiring. There are many reasons people may decide to add a ceiling fan to a room and they need to be sure on the ceiling fan wiring.
A ceiling fan adds a touch of flare to the room as well as helps to reduce the power bill.
A ceiling fan will help to move the air around the room helping to keep it cooler in the summer and helps circulate the warm air around the room in the winter.
No matter what reason you have to install a ceiling fan you want to be sure that you know what you are doing where the wiring is concerned.
Easy to wire
Amazingly, it is not very difficult to wire a ceiling fan. It has been said that wiring a ceiling fan is much like wiring a light fixture.
They main things you have to be sure of are, that all connections are secure and all screw, nut or bolts are tightly in place. In this article you will see how simple it is as we go over ceiling fan wiring.
Most Common Wires
You need to be sure that when the job is complete that you have no loose nuts, they need to be the correct size for the fitting. There should be no copper threads showing from the fixture. The most common wires that are used for wiring a home are solid copper and are either 12 or 14 gauge wire.
The wire is connected to a 20 or 15 amp 120vAC circuit. You can also check with a specialist at a local hardware store if you find that the above mentioned is somewhat different when you get your packaged ceiling fan home and opened up.
Wire Colours
You will find that most all ceiling fans come with 4 wires one of which is the ground wire. Each wire is a different colour: green, white, black and last being one of three colours (white/black striped, red or blue). The green wire serves as the ground for the whole system.
The rest of the wires are the lead wires for different areas such as: the light kit and fan motor use the white wire as the neutral lead, the fan motor uses the black wire for the hot lead; the light kits use the white/black or red/blue striped wire for the hot lead. So you see that it is very simple when setting up the wiring for the ceiling fan.
Connect wires
Make sure that you connect the neutral wire from the house to the neutral wire to the fan; usually both of these wires are white. If you find that your white wire is coded with coloured tape, it may be used for something other then the neutral wire. Keeping along the same lines, you will want to connect the ground wire (green) to the home ground wire which should also be green.
If there is no ground wire in the home wiring to attach it to that means that you may not have a separate ground wire so in that case you would attach the ground wire from the fan to the right clip or screw.
You should now be left with 2 wires which are the lead wires for the optional light kit and the fan motor. If there is no light kit included then you will attach the black wire to the hot lead to the home wires or power supply. If you have a light kit then you would attach both of the lead wires to the lead on the power supply.
