Energy Star Ceiling Fans
Quiet motors and top efficiency

Energy star ceiling fans. One big reason that lots of people use ceiling fans is to reduce their energy usage. Therefore, it's important to get the most efficient ceiling fan possible.

Because many ceiling fans also feature lights, and those lights are often the brightest and most frequently used fixtures in the room, ceiling fans can turn out to use a lot more energy than you think. Fortunately, Energy Star ceiling fans can be purchased that use a lot less.

What is an Energy Star?

The Energy Star program is sponsored by the federal government, to help promote consumer products, like household appliances, heating and air conditioning, and ceiling fans that are energy efficient. It was created in 1992 by the EPA to help reduce the consumption of energy.

Products bearing the Energy Star logo meet certain specifications for energy use. Participation in the program is voluntary, but most companies are involved, since people use the Energy Star logo to help them shop for the right products.

In the case of Energy efficient ceiling fans, this means that the fan needs to be around fifty percent more efficient than an ordinary fan. This greater efficiency is accomplished using better motors and more effective blade designs, as well as long lasting lighting.

However, in order to get the most out of your Energy efficient ceiling fan, you'll also have to install and use it correctly.

This means using the appropriate electrical box when you install it, and mounting the fan on either a ceiling joist or a special bracket to reduce wobble.

Wobbling fans are dangerous, as they can fall, as well as being slightly less efficient.

Remember to turn the fan off if you're not in the room. This saves power, without significantly changing the temperature of an unoccupied room. You can use your Energy Star ceiling fan all year to keep air moving.

Run it counter-clockwise in the summer, causing a cool downdraft. In the winter, run your fan in the opposite direction, on a low setting. Warm air near the ceiling is forced down towards the floor, helping you save heat.

To get the most of an Energy Star fan, be sure to buy the right size for your room. The most popular model is 52 inches wide. However, smaller models might be appropriate for smaller rooms.

If your room is less than seventy-five square feet in area, a fan with twenty-nine to thirty-six inch blades will suffice.

For rooms between seventy-five and one hundred forty-four square feet, use a thirty-six to forty-two inch fan, and for rooms between a hundred and forty-four and two hundred twenty-five square feet, try a forty-four inch fan. Rooms larger than this, up to four hundred square feet, can use a fifty to fifty-four inch fan.
