Kitchen Ceiling Fans Economics and Technology Integrated
Kitchen ceiling fans are not commonly seen in many homes. This means a lot of consumers are missing out on the usefulness of installing a ceiling-mount fan in their kitchens.
The main advantage of using these ceiling-mount fans in a cooking area is due to many factors, such as its ability to produce both cooling and heating, the way it circulates air, and how it also adds kitchen lighting without making the kitchen ceiling look cluttered. After all, kitchens are already cluttered enough with all your kitchen appliances and cooking tools.
Also, take note that kitchens are hot, humid environments, so they are prone to some dampness. Due to this, not all fans on the market may be used in kitchens. This is why you should put a high degree of carefulness in choosing the ideal fan for your kitchen.
Benefits of Using Ceiling Fans in Your Kitchen
Kitchens are full of appliances that generate heat. In the summer, cooking in the kitchen can produce unbearable heating inside the house. A ceiling-mount fan can effectively circulate air and produce much-needed cooling without using as much electricity as an air conditioner will.
Aside from that, in the winter, the fan will not be useless because you can also use it for heating. And since most kitchen ceiling fans these days come packaged with a light fixture, you also get instant kitchen lighting without having to install two different appliances on your kitchen ceiling.
One of the ETL damp listed fans that you can use in your kitchen is the Hunter Bayview, a 54-inch fan that’s just the right size for large kitchens. This is quite a popular choice for those looking for damp listed fans, especially since its price of $230 is quite reasonable given all its features.
As a Hunter fan, you can expect the usual fare, which includes the WhisperWind motor and the 3-position mounting system, which means you can use the fan regardless of what type of ceiling you have in your kitchen.
As one of the damp-listed kitchen ceiling fans in the market, the Hunter Bayview features plastic blades in the shape of palm leaves. They are of a dark wicker and antique finish, and are reversible if you want a change of look. The base, on the other hand, features a matching provencal gold finish. All in all, this creates a subdued rustic look, a look that is very popular among style-friendly homeowners.
The Hunter Bayview is also fairly efficient. It is capable of producing up to 6419 CFM of airflow power, and uses 83 watts to do so. This gives it an efficiency rating of 77 CFM/watt, which is average in the market.
Many homeowners prefer a classic-looking ceiling fan in their kitchens, one that’s damp-rated and yet looks homey and cozy. The Westinghouse Bayside is one such model. Designed as an outdoor and indoor fan, it is made of especially durable material that can withstand constant exposure to dampness, but it retains a warm comforting look that’s perfect for indoor use. This is thanks to the combination of an oil rubbed bronze base, the dark cherry finish of the blades, and the ABS resin construction of the blades.
This is a 44-inch ceiling fan, which makes it ideal for use in kitchens up to 12 x 12 feet or 144 square feet. Its motor is a 152 mm x 12 mm silicon steel motor equipped with a triple capacitor, providing the fan with three fan speeds. Another good thing about the Bayside is that it is quite affordable at only $150.
The downside is that this is not that capable of producing powerful air movement, with its airflow capacity at only 3673 CFM. Its efficiency rating, however, is similar to the Hunter Bayview at 77 CFM/watt. This means that while both fans are equally efficient, you get more power out of the Bayview than from the Westinghouse Bayside.
The kitchen ceiling fans reviewed here are designed for medium to large kitchens. But if you have a smaller kitchen, one of the possible choices you have is the Monte Carlo Micro 24 fan, a 24-inch fan that’s UL and CUL listed for damp locations.
This is excellent for small kitchens in apartments or condo units. You can choose from the all-white version, the roman bronze with teak blades, or the brushed steel with mahogany blades. Due to its flexible design, it can be used both outdoors and indoors.
This small fan is powered by a 153mm x 10mm motor and its blades are angled at 14 degrees. Despite this, however, the Monte Carlo is not that efficient. It can produce only 1807 CFM of airflow. This is still fairly understandable given its size, but its efficiency rating of 45 CFM/watt is way below industry average. But since damp rated kitchen fans of this size are not widely available, the Micro 24 is indeed one of the top-selling fans of its kind.
How to Choose Ceiling Fans for Kitchens
To keep your kitchen fan from rusting or to prevent warped blades, look for one that is rated safe for use in damp locations. There are many indoor fans that are damp-rated. These fans are designed to withstand constant moisture and dampness, but are not able to withstand total wetness unlike wet-rated fans.
