Light Fixtures
Great Home Decorating Accessories

Light fixtures, also known as light fittings or luminaire, are electrical devices designed to provide artificial lighting to a room. They are made up of a fixture body attached to a light socket that holds the lamp or light bulb, which is replaceable. The body is also attached to a power source.

A light fixture can either be fixed or portable. A fixed light fitting stays in place and is therefore wired directly to a power source. All you need to do is switch it on. On the other hand, portable fixture, like a freestanding desk lamp, comes with a plug that allows it to be moved from room to room. Some fixtures are also attached to a ceiling fan, resulting in a versatile, dual-purpose appliance.

Different Types of Light Fixtures

  • Chandeliers - are some of the most elegant, most dramatic lighting fixtures around. Among other options, these light fixtures make the strongest statement. They also make grand centerpieces in any room and are great for great halls and grand living rooms where the ceilings provide ample space for the lights to hang from it. But since chandeliers also come in different sizes, they can also be used in smaller areas, such as lounges, hallways, and foyers. In fact, there are special foyer chandeliers that are sized just right so they can be used to greet your guests as they enter your home.

  • Flush mount lighting fixtures - are simple, clean, and refined light sources that provide ample illumination but do not attract that much attention. Due to their simplicity and lack of details, many flush mount lights look sophisticated and are great for minimalist or contemporary homes. Flush mounts are also nice and clean to look at because they do not extend down or have many details that clutter up the ceiling. They are also great for low-ceilinged rooms and can sometimes be attached to a flush mount ceiling fan.

  • Wall sconce - A sconce can be used to provide lighting to a specific point or area, which is why the bowl-shaped cover, which is placed against the wall, is either pointing upwards or downwards depending on the desired direction for the light. Usually, wall sconces are used to illuminate artwork or architectural pieces. A wall sconce is also an ideal choice when you want to add a soft, subtle glow to a small area such as a hallway.

  • Pendant lights - are one-piece light fixtures that are hang and suspended from the ceiling by a chain, rod, or cord. They come in various sizes and can be used to illuminate specific areas such as tabletops. They are often used in a group, with the pendant lights positioned in a row over a countertop, a table, or a kitchen island.

Factors to Consider When Choosing A Light Fixture

Energy usage
The first thing you need to check is the energy usage of a light fixture. This can be measured in terms of the watts of electricity a light kit uses when all the lights are switched on. If you are using a ceiling fan with light kit, you should look at their combined energy usage. The lower the wattage usage is, the more efficient the product is. If you want to save on your utility bills without compromising anything, look for Energy Star products.

Location and room layout
One of the obviously important factors to consider when choosing the right lighting is the location. This tells you many things, such as how long the fixture can be and how large you can go based on how much space is available, as well as whether you need to look for special kinds of lighting.

For example, if you need kitchen lighting, an easy to clean one would be nice whereas a chandelier will just pick up lots of dirt and grime from all the cooking you do. And if you need bathroom lighting, the fixture should produce a clear, bright light instead of the warm glow of bedroom lighting. If you are looking for a living room centerpiece or a foyer lighting for your ancestral home, an antique chandelier will be nice.

Price
Since light fixtures come in different types, there is no single price range that you can work with. Also, for ceiling fans with lights, the price range will also differ. Thus, the best way to find a product that gives value for your money is to compare different models of the same type. This will give you an idea of how much fixtures of a certain type usually cost.

Some Tips in Choosing Lighting Fixtures

When buying lighting fixtures, consider your goals. Do you need to illuminate one small area or the whole room? Do you need brighter lighting near a table or desk? Do you need a light kit attached to a ceiling fan? This will tell you what kind of pieces you need. Also, look for stylish yet functional pieces that work great, look great, and match the design of your home.
