A low profile ceiling fan, often referred to as a flush mount, or Hugger is made to be installed in areas where the ceiling height is less than eight feet.

Most of these type ceiling fans are manufactured with smaller motors relative to the blades pitch.

Being that the blades are closer to the ceiling with these Huggers type models, the fans have smaller motors so the fans do not wobble or vibrate from air bouncing between the blades and the ceiling, causing excessive noise.

The downside of having a low profile fan instead of a traditional ceiling fan is air circulation.

Hugger ceiling fans are not as efficient as traditional model ceiling fans moving air in the area because of the limited space between the ceiling and fan blades. Also the trade off is the need of a smaller motor to reduce noise.

Low profile fans are necessary for safety reasons when ceiling height is the issue. Fans blades should not be less than 7 feet from the floor.

The blades on these Hugger models are between 5 and 7 inches from the ceiling.

Other considerations for having a low profile ceiling would be fan positioning under a bed or table when a conventional ceiling fan can not be used. Also to be considered would be an accessory light kit for the unit. This would also add 6 to 10 inches, or more to a ceiling fan's total height.
